Discoveries and Happy Expressions!

After four years with the Delvins, Cindy finally let me-the eldest and most decrepit crew member- escape off the farm for an afternoon each week to deliver your shares to The Turnip Truck in East Nashville, and am I loving it! I was reluctant to drive the big Izuzu up the interstate, especially the I 40/I 65 section so close to rush hour traffic. I figured out I can exit at 2nd/4th Ave.and go over the new Shelby St. bridge to avoid the log jam. I like seeing downtown, the new red sculpture and LP field up close.

This week handing out boxes at the Turnip Truck is even more enjoyable because of this beautiful day. Finally, blue skies and cooler temperatures! A thermometer on my drive up from Franklin read 85 degrees. Hallelujah! I have settled into my routine of Wednesday afternoons in East Nashville and learned a lot about the area. Earlier in the summer with temperatures raging above 100 degrees, I discovered Bongo Java and it not only has cafe mochas but air conditioning and free WI-FI. Thank all of you for asking how I was faring in the heat. I think I replied that it was better being at the Turnip Truck than out in those scorching fields in College Grove. I always thought Five Points was in Historic Downtown Franklin at the Starbucks intersection. Now I find out it's one block from here. Last week after pick-up, I drove through a few of the neighboring streets checking out all the renovation projects. I also found Shelby Park with all the ball fields, golf links and bike path.

I love meeting you and seeing you each week. One of my previous jobs was delivering flowers to homes and offices. This is much the same watching your expressions as your peek into the boxes to choose the 'best' one. I like to think I am bringing you something you look forward to receiving. Sometimes I help at the Franklin Farmer's Market and I get to meet some of you and see your happy expressions as well! I guess anytime now, we will be harvesting dew-covered greens in the early morning cold temperatures getting wet and freezing. I can't wait!

Debbie

P.S. Let me know what other sights I should see in East Nashville.

This week you will enjoy:

Watermelon
Slicing Tomatoes
Juliets ( 1 pint)
Butternut Squash
Roma Tomatoes
Basil
Cucumbers
Zucchini
Peppers
Spaghettti Squash
Joe's Long Hot Peppers

Drive safely and we'll see you all tomorrow!

Recipes Are Below...

Tomato Pie with Basil Pesto

1 9-inch pie shell, frozen or freshly made
3 large, ripe tomatoes
Salt and black pepper
1/2 cup basil pesto
1/2 cup mayonnaise
1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
1/2 cup shredded Parmesan cheese
1 tablespoon pine nuts

Directions:

Preheat the oven to 400.

Slice the tomatoes 1/4-inch thick. Place tomato slices between paper towels to remove extra moisture.

In a bowl, combine pesto, mayonnaise, mozzarella and Parmesan.

Layer tomato slices in the pie shell, sprinkling liberally with salt and pepper as you go, mounding slightly in the center.

Dot the pesto mixture over the tomatoes, and bake for 20 minutes. Sprinkle pine nuts on top of the pie, and bake another 3-5 minutes.

Serve warm or at room-temperature
